Is Bonsai Gardening New to You?

By: Rick Lasslett

So... you understand that Bonsai is all about miniature trees, all the same you've got no idea about "Shakan - Chokkan - Moyogi"? Dont worry, its not necessary to know the correct names of styles or plant species, such as Bonsai Juniper or Bonsai Japanese Maple. All you have to have to start with is a wish to grow a bonsai plant along with some entry-level expertise.

To get started in the fascinating art of bonsai gardening, you will require some basic gardening skills, a few elementary tools and supplies, a healthy dose of common sense and a little artistic flair.

If you have grown some plants in pots before - and have managed to keep them alive, healthy and looking good, then you already have the prerequisite skills for bonsai gardening. Apart from the actual techniques for keeping the plant compact, there really is not that much more to it!

Of course much has been written about those techniques, so much so that you could never read it all. In any case they are not ALL essential to get the result you are after for your bonsai work of art.

When you begin, the first task is just to keep your bonsai plant alive and at the same time looking like a plant! In this you will more than likely have mixed success. Even so don't lose hope if you accidentally murder a plant or two. Its been done before and it will be done again. Thats just the way it is.

With the passing of time as well as with trial and error you will cotton on. And during the process you will feel great fullfillment at being the co-creator of such an awesome and exquisite living thing. It really can sometimes make your heart sing!

There are essentials you will need to know. However don't study up on everything all at once, just start with baby steps and take one step at a time. Begin with a simple to grow plant for example bonsai juniper. Learn a couple things about bonsai care (watering would be preferable first up) and then practice until you feel confident that you know what you are doing, and so move on to the next couple of skills....and so on.

Over time you will be the one being asked for advice on growing bonsai plants.
