Instruction in Effective Communication

By: Dave Griffiths

"The purpose of writing is to establish a space in which individuals can think." Ed Schlossberg, Author, Educator

"According to some surveys, people's biggest fear is public speaking. The Number Two is dying. Does that sound correct? That means to the average person, if you attend a funeral, you're better off expired than doing the eulogy." John Steinbeck, Writer

When you are writing and speaking in public, successful communication starts and ends with the what -- the content. The how will come much easier. Once writing training and presentation skills training help you in gaining success (and you will have confidence because you'll be a trained pro) you'll have no worries writing or speaking in public.

In order to accomplish that, aided by writing training, remember the three foundations of effective communication, whether written or spoken:

Writing is thinking. Compared to an unplanned conversation, writing -- whether a presentation to a group or a report for the boss or a sales pitch -- furnishes you the time to show how smart you are.

Understand your audience and your readers. How much do they know already? Are they specialists? Do they want to be amused or trained or persuaded? What do you want them to get from your speech?

Study and rewrite and, when delivering presentation skills training, practice. If you do not proof your work with care before sending it, or practice the details and delivery of your presentation, you risk looking careless and unprofessional. It's called quality control, without which excellent communication is nearly impossible.
