Coccydynia, What is it?

By: Eric Minden

Coccydynia is the medical term to describe tailbone pain or the inflammation
of the tailbone or coccyx. The pain of the tailbone can be mild to severe
depending on the cause of the pain.

In many cases the pain is the result of an injury to the tailbone. If you fall
too hard on your buttocks you can inflict pain on the coccyx. If the pain
persists you may have bruised the tailbone or even fractured the tailbone.

In any case, pain to the tailbone is not pleasant and can be extremely painful
to the patient. Once the pain goes away the person will be able to go about
their lives like nothing happened, they will just need to avoid what they
were doing when they did get hurt.

There are few symptoms that can be noticed by the sufferer. More often than
not, the pain is the result of an action, either falling or sitting wrong,
can cause pain to the tailbone. Some people experience pain after sitting,
standing, or moving for long periods of time. Also, if you sit on a hard
surface for a long period of time, you may begin to experience some acute
pain, this is simply the result of the hard surface.

Other symptoms include sever pain in the tailbone area. These pains may be
present during sexual intercourse or bowel movements. Sensitivity to the
lower back and buttocks is also present as well as pains in the leg.

If you are experiencing pains in the tailbone area or in the lower back that
may be caused by the tailbone, you should contact your physician immediately.
Only a doctor can diagnose this condition and only a doctor can treat this
condition. So talk to your doctor about your symptoms and find a way to relieve
the pain of coccydynia.
