Business Communication Training

By: Dave Griffiths

"The purpose of writing is to establish a space in which individuals can think." Ed Schlossberg, Author

"According to some surveys, an individual's greatest fear is public speaking. The second is dying. Does that sound right? That means to the normal everyday person, if you attend a funeral, you're better off in the casket than giving the eulogy." John Steinbeck, Novelist

When you are writing and speaking in public, effective communication begins and ends with the what -- the content. The how will come much easier. If writing training and presentation skills training assist you in gaining confidence (and you will have confidence because you'll be a trained pro) you'll have no issues writing or speaking in public.

In order to accomplish that, aided by writing training, remember the three pillars of effective business communication, written or spoken:

Writing is thinking. Compared to an unplanned conversation, writing -- whether a presentation to a client or a report for the owner or a sales proposal -- gives you the time to show how smart you are.

Understand your audience and your readers. Are they advanced or beginners? Are they experts? Do they want to be amused or instructed or persuaded? What do you want them to get from your report?

Edit and rewrite and, in the case of delivering presentation skills training, practice time and again. If you do not proof your work carefully before hitting the "send" button, or practice the style and delivery of your presentation, you risk looking careless and unprofessional. It's called QC (quality control), without which excellent communication is almost impossible.
